A TREE HAS FALLEN. PA MODOU JAMMEH A.K.A M.J- Producer, Singer, Studio Engineer PAST AWAY.
This young man was not only an epitome of incredible talent but a builder and helper of the storming and beaming growing talents in The Gambia. In case you do not know him, he was Pa Modou Jammeh popularly known as M.J, the brain behind the famous Bulldoff Records and the mastermind of the widely acclaimed "Smiling Coast Rhythm" that is already ceasing the air waves all over. "Doing music is what I had loved doing since I was a kid. That's where I found my happiness", he said.
Essentially, M.J started getting really serious with his musical career around 1993 when he was going to school. Though the music industry in The Gambia then was at its very infancy, the radiance surrounding M.J's talent was very brightly noticeable. "Ah, things were way more difficult then, but one needed to keep faith to be able to float". M.J said jovially. In the year 1995, M.J quit singing as a solo artist and joined the Pepper House Crew. The crew was strictly singing hardcore Rap. It was a style and a revolution of unveiling all the struggles, injustices, poverty and uncertainties surrounding the lives of low class people living in the ghettos. "Our lyrics were truly controversial, that's why we aroused to rescue both those that appreciated as well as haters". The crew was, and is still one of the hottest in The Gambia. In 1998, M.J came up with the breakthrough- Bulldoff Records, the studio that had taken Gambian music to a greater level. When asked about the circumstances that prompted the setting up of the studio, M.J said, "The idea was to create a studio that would produce better sound, at a lower cost". Believe it or not, M.J had transformed the entire scenario of Gambian music in all its dynamics. The joints that stroll out of his studio are strictly off the chains. It is really amazing to know that despite his immense dexterity and outstanding achievements, M.J never learnt his art formally. "I always wanted to hear myself sing, so I used to take a double tape recorder to play a musical beat and sing directly into the other," he said laughing. However, over the years, M.J has learned his art on his own through research, reading and exploration to become a master in his art in all respects. "Despite the numerous obstacles and challenges, I say alhamdoulillah, cos my work so far is being appreciated. My greatest wish is to have a bigger studio, better equipment, my own record label as well as learn studio engineering formally to broaden and widen my horizon and scope in the art". These were the words of MJ. His most recent work were the 2 hot beats he created called the "SMILING COAST AND ALSAMADAY RHYTHM". These are very hot beats that most Gambian artists of the present generation did something on. The lineup of the "smiling coast rhythm" has already been release while he was working on the "ALSAMADAY RHYHM."
MJ is not a strange name in the Gambia. He has worked with top Nation and international artists who come to the Gambia for musical projects.
